The Heart of ABA:
Understanding How Your Child Learns

At its core, ABA is about understanding how a person learns. It's the science of learning and motivation, made personal for your child. The main goals are simple: to build on helpful behaviors that give your child more independence and to reduce behaviors that might get in the way of their learning or safety.

Think of it like teaching your child to ride a bike.

You wouldn't just put them on it and expect them to go. You'd start with training wheels, hold the back of the seat, and cheer them on. ABA works the same way. It breaks down big goals into small, achievable steps, building confidence through success and finding joy in the process.

The Building Blocks

The Building Blocks of Modern ABA

ABA isn't a single method but a flexible approach. A few key ideas make it work, and they are probably things you already do as a parent.

1
Celebrating the Wins
Positive Reinforcement
When a behavior is followed by something rewarding, it's more likely to happen again. The key is finding what brings your child genuine joy and celebrating their effort.
2
Building Skills First
Growth over Reduction
Harmful behaviors are often a way of communicating a need. We teach new ways to get those needs met, like asking for a break instead of hitting.
3
Connection is Key
Therapy Should Feel Good
Before any learning can happen, your child must feel safe, respected, and supported. Building trust is the foundation of everything we do.

What Success Looks Like in Everyday Life

Success isn't measured by perfection. It's measured by meaningful progress
that you can see and feel every day.

Functional language has increased exponentially. SIBs have decreased to almost nonexistent. He is overall happier and so much less frustrated. He enjoys playing and engaging in activities much more than before we began therapy. He transitions from activities and from inside to outside and back seamlessly. I see him smiling and laughing while interacting and absolutely nothing can top that!

Seeing Him Smile and Laugh Again
I have three kids. The oldest has learned to do his morning routine and to socialize better. The second has learned to communicate what he wants and needs and to calm his big feelings when he isn’t getting what he wants. My other son has started using more words and phrases functionally.
Life-Changing Support for Our Whole Family
A Parent of Three
My child now utilizes functional communication and no longer engages in maladaptive behaviors to get his needs met. His language is being supported and is increasing at an incredible rate. He is happier, healthier and sleeping better. We are now able to engage in community activities as a family and are enjoying our time together in new and exciting ways. I no longer fear that he will injure himself with his behaviors. He is getting ready to attend school and participate in sports activities in our community

Our two sons have made tremendous progress this last year. Our oldest is back in school and working within a structured schedule, which is a HUGE win for him, and our youngest is making a lot of progress towards the ultimate goal of going back to a mainstream classroom.

A Necessary Conversation: How ABA Has Evolved
It's impossible to talk about ABA therapy without acknowledging its complicated past. Early approaches were often rigid and did not always respect the child's well-being. Those concerns are valid and deeply important.
Thankfully, a significant transformation has taken place. Modern, high-quality ABA is built on a foundation of compassion, assent (a child's willing participation), and connection. The focus is to empower your child, not "fix" them.
